You’re approaching or have reached menopause when bone health’s a big deal: Lower oestrogen lowers calcium uptake, rocketing your needs from 700 to 1200mg/day (1.7x). Most women (~80%) fall short, increasing their risk of osteoporosis and fractures later on in life.
You’re pregnant or breastfeeding and need enough calcium to protect your bones and give your baby the best start (700 and 1250mg/day respectively).
You’re a man over 55, when calcium needs also rise to 1200mg/day due to age-related bone loss. The NDNS shows 15-25% of over-55s fall short.
You’ve been diagnosed with osteopenia (lower than average bone density for your age) and need more calcium (up to 1200mg/day) to prevent osteoporosis.
